I took biochem with this professor last spring and he is by far the worst professor/teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I decided to take it with him instead of the other professor because his class was offered at noon instead of 8am. Big mistake! His monotone voice did not help keep me awake nor did his lectures that seemed to have nothing to do with anything. He just copied pages from the book and pointed to the figures. Then the next day he would show you the same figures again. Not many people in the class took notes because they had no idea what he was talking about. I spent my time in that class drawing flowers in my book and watching the people in front of me fall asleep. Sometimes I didn't even have to listen to his lectures becase he didn't show up to class. The averages to his tests were usually around 50% and instead of trying to raise those he just gave out a crazy curve which helps your grade but will not help you if you want to apply to med or vet school. My 76% in the class was almost an A and I couldn't tell you anything I learned. I actually spent one test filling in circles really fast then coloring molecules to take up some time. If anyone has to take this class I would recommend taking it with Ferral even if it is at 8am so you can actually learn something. I am in cell bio now and there are so many things that would be so much easier if I had actually learned them in biochem. Good luck to anyone taking biochem!
His class was a very difficult class. The key is to meet with him outside of class and get him to learn your name. Once he gets to know you and he knows that you are trying very hard in his class, he will definitely take that into consideration when it comes time for assigning grades.
I had to take this course for my Microbioloy major. I withdrew and decided to take Farrell's class instead (even though it meant taking it at 8 am). Schenck was quite dry and confusing. His lecture notes consisted of transparancies that he wrote illegibly on. Personally, I follow printable notes better for a chemistry class. To anyone taking this course, I would suggest Farrell instead because he makes class very interesting. He also has pretty predictable tests and interesting supplemental readings. Good Luck Everyone!
This cat was not that bad. Sure the lectures will put you to sleep, but the tests where easy. You had to study, but as far as a multiple choice goes, the wrong answers were so worng that you could reason your way through the question. If you're lazy this is an alternative to a heavier work load that will be put on you by Farrell. However, I am told if you want to learn about biochem then go with Farrell. This guy is a good way to get by having to do a lot of work.
ohmigod..avoid at all costs...farrell will seem like heaven by comparison..his lectures are the cure for insomnia, tests are ridiculous. he had no prep for lectures, would put up overhead slides of graphics from the text and drone on for 50 minutes. Or he'd write semi-legibly on a clear overhead. likes to have his class average at about a 70. |
