Things We Would Rather Do Than Pay Student Loans

By Brittany Loeffler on October 11, 2017

Graduation has come and gone and now it’s time to start paying back your student loans. Each month you will get a bill in the mail to hack away at the mountain of debt you’ve accumulated over the past four years. It may be a little, it may be a lot, but however much it is, there are things that many of us would rather be doing than putting a percentage of our paychecks to student loans.

Travel

You won’t be young forever! Traveling takes a lot of energy, which 20-somethings are full of. If you’re going to travel the world, now is the time to do it. You just graduated college and have nothing holding you down … except for your student loans.

Read a book

You may be sick and tired of reading after successfully getting your degree, but what would you rather do? Pay student loans or reread your old physics textbook? I would much rather save my money and read about inertia again.

Watch a movie

It could be the worst movie in the world, but I would much rather sit on my couch with a bowl of popcorn and sit through hours of it than repay my student loans. Any genre is fine with me — horror, noir, comedy, dramedy, you name it! As long as I don’t have to pay my student loans, I’ll be watching it.

Run a 5k

To some people, this may be a preferred hobby on Saturday mornings. To others, it’s their worst nightmare. However, if someone came up to me and said that if I successfully ran a 5k then my student loans would be absolved, then you bet I’m going out and buying a pair of Nikes.

Save for retirement

Rather than paying back some company you borrowed money from to earn an education, why not put that money away for future you? Some people may not realize just how important it is to start saving for retirement in your 20′s. If you’re going to throw money away from your paycheck, wouldn’t you rather throw it into a retirement savings account so it can earn interest and grow without you doing a thing?

Attend a lecture

If you could sit through another four years of lectures, would you? What if you didn’t have to repay your student loans? It could be the most monotone professor teaching the most boring subject and I would be sitting front row every class listening carefully if it meant I wasn’t paying my student loans.

Donate blood

I’ve never met someone who likes needles. So, saying that we would much rather have a needle stuck in our arms than pay back our student loans says a lot about how much we don’t want to pay back our student loans. Even though it’s a good cause and people should be excited and want to give blood, it’s just not the first thing I would want to do if I wanted a day of fun.

Go through old Facebook pictures

You know the ones I’m talking about. The old Facebook pictures you posted when you were in eighth grade with braces, sidebangs, and skinny jeans. There may have been a pimple or two that slipped in too. As painful and embarrassing as it is to look at yourself going through puberty, it is something I would way rather do than repay my student loans. Who knows, you’ll probably get a few good laughs out of it!

Suffer from a parasite

While you’re traveling instead of paying off student loans, here’s another thing you may want to do — contract a parasite. It’s common when traveling in third world countries to contract a parasite. It’s only a few days of suffering, maybe some time in a hospital, and about a week of antibiotics. Wouldn’t you rather suffer for a week with stomach and abdominal pain than have student loans hanging over your head for the next 30 years?

Go to the dentist

Having someone else’s hands in my mouth picking away at the plaque buildup between my teeth sounds so much more appealing than sending part of my newly earned paycheck to pay off my student loans. The dentist can even talk to me while his hands are back playing with my molars; that’s fine!

Student loans

Most of your classmates have student loans that they will need to pay off. There is probably a long list of things that you would rather do than pay off your student loans, but the reality is that it is now your responsibility to make these payments because that’s how you earned your degree. Welcome to being an adult.
